We frequently hear references to great questions, "Why are we here?", "Where did we come from?", "How did it all begin?", "Where are we going?", "Will there be an end?", "What is evil, why do we define it as evil, and where did it come from?"
Left to our own speculation, there would be (and are) many "answers" to those questions. However, it takes a view from outside to be able to know the end from the beginning and all of the purposes and causes that make the universe function. Fortunately, God has taken upon Himself the privilege of revealing to us answers to these questions.
Amidst the many "answers" speculated throughout our cultures, there is one body of truth that God has revealed to living beings. Anything that is true is consistent with anything else that is true. If there is falsehood, it is inconsistent with some truth. There cannot be two different true answers to the same question. If you think there can be, you should go take a logic class rather than spending time with theology. We will see throughout this brief study that God declares himself as "True" and that He invites His truth can be tested and verified.
Every logical test requires a major and minor premise to lead to a deduction. The validity of the major and minor premise determine the validity of the deduction. God has declared Himself as that major premise from which other information can be deducted. To remove God from that position presumes that the logician has enough information about the universe to declare that God is not the ultimate source of revelation and truth. They equate themselves with God in knowledge and judgement. They place their faith in themselves that their calculation and assessment is truth.
Self-asserted Supremacy
To declare one's self in that position reveals the obvious folly of judgement. To declare one's self equal to or greater than the God who has revealed Himself is futile.
God Himself has made it clear to us that our finite knowledge is flawed when it comes to understanding things about God. Therefore, God has told us to be aware of these flaws and to take that into consideration when we are assessing His reality and purposes. Isaiah 55:8:
"Indeed, my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds, for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans."
Again in 1 Corinthians 1:25:
"For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength." 1 Corinthians 3:19: "For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. As it is written, 'He catches the wise in their craftiness.' And again, 'The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise are futile.'"
Jesus said in John 12:48:
"The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him at the last day."
And in Jeremiah 17:9:
"The human mind is more deceitful than anything else. It is incurably bad. Who can understand it?"
We need to understand the limits of our human knowledge and get over the arrogance of our supposed superiority.
Therefore, we will presume that the major premise of our understanding is the God who has revealed Himself and has revealed to us answers to life, morality, ethics, and science. Since God has created the standards for morality, ethics and science, they are subsets of theology. Without a proper theology we cannot have a proper understanding of morality, ethics, or science. Without theology we cannot have a proper understanding of life.
